Blossom Hill Welcomes Ohio Sen. Matt Dolan to Abilities Enrichment Center

Tour of new 25k sq. ft. day program facility kicks off season of giving

In this season of thanksgiving, Blossom Hill was pleased to welcome Ohio Senator Matt Dolan to its newly opened Abilities Enrichment Center. Also touring the center was Mayor Matthew Castelli, of Middleburg Heights. Blossom Hill is a non-profit that provides 24/7 residential care for individuals with severe developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio. Abilities is a 25,000 square foot facility in Middleburg Heights that provides day program activities for the same community.

“We were thrilled to welcome Sen. Dolan and Mayor Castelli. Truly, Senator Dolan surprised us when he offered to witness firsthand the vital work we do for individuals with severe disabilities,” said Lisa Kristosik, president and CEO of Blossom Hill.

Dolan’s visit comes the day before the Thanksgiving holiday and less than a week before Giving Tuesday, traditionally a day to donate to worthy charities.

“We hope (Sen. Dolan’s) visit can inspire the community. Blossom Hill has enhanced the daily lives of individuals with disabilities and their families since 1968, but we remain virtually invisible in Northeast Ohio, and that contributes to funding challenges each year,” said Kristosik. “We hope Abilities Enrichment Center highlights how contributions, large or small, are wholly re-invested to continue our mission of loving, personalized care.”

Dolan’s tour included all facets of Abilities, including the arts and crafts center and the sensory room, an innovative therapeutic space where individuals who are feeling anxious or stressed can separate from others and de-escalate in a calm and safe environment.

“In the season of Thanksgiving, to see the joy on folks’ faces, it’s inspiring,” said Sen. Dolan of his tour of Abilities and immersion into the culture of Blossom Hill. “You really feel it. You are bringing an energy to a population that otherwise wouldn’t have it.”

Abilities offers nurturing opportunities to individuals across all levels of care, from those with the least to the greatest level of independence. Opportunities for experiences, peer and community interaction, enrichment, and fun are specifically tailored to each individual to help them achieve their personal goals for fulfillment.
