UPS to freeze pension plan

The markets extended its gains during the midday with the Dow leaping 154 points to 21,465. Nasdaq jumped 72 points to 6,219.


United Parcel Service will freeze the defined benefit pension plan for its nonunion employees in five years. The package delivery company's 70,000 nonunion workers, most of whom are managers or supervisors, will be transitioned to a 401(k) plan. The soaring costs of a traditional pension plan prompted UPS to make the change.


The Canadian Supreme Court ruled that a court in Canada has the authority to issue an injunction that applies globally. Google had been ordered to temporarily remove search results for a rival of Equustek Solutions while a lawsuit between the two competing companies was being resolved. Google had complied by removing the results on only the Canadian version of Google but the court ordered the removal worldwide.


Meal kit delivery company Blue Apron has slashed its initial public offering valuation from approximately $3.2 billion to $2.08 billion. The start up reported a loss of $54.9 million in 2016 while spending heavily on marketing. Blue Apron expects online restaurant sales to climb approximately 22.6% annually over the next four years.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 4 to 1 on the NYSE and by nearly 7 to 2 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 soared 22 points to 2,441. Bitcoin jumped $85 to $2515.
