UAE Innovator Unleashes Potential in Bluetooth Technology with This US Patent

In an exhilarating stride forward for wireless communication, Dr. Ahmad Bazzi, a visionary inventor and esteemed researcher at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), has been officially recognized by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for his pioneering contributions. Bazzi’s work, encapsulated in the freshly minted US patent number 11,496,343, marks a significant leap towards enhancing Bluetooth connectivity, promising to turbocharge data transmission rates like never before.

A Journey from Industry to Innovation

Reflecting on his industrious journey, Dr. Ahmad Bazzi shared with us, “It was a thrilling challenge to push the boundaries of Bluetooth technology during my industry tenure. The pursuit of real-time, superior data rates was not just a goal but a passion.” This spirit of innovation is precisely what led to the development of a novel decoding method for RF signals, carried out in partnership with co-inventor Dr. Lisa Perros Meilhac. Their invention, particularly focused on Bluetooth® standards including Bluetooth BR (Basic Rate) and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), is a testament to their dedication to advancing wireless communications.

New Possibilities Across Industries

The implications of Bazzi’s invention are vast, holding the potential to revolutionize sectors from audio and health to the burgeoning realm of the Internet of Things (IoT). By harnessing the power and efficiency of Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) in a groundbreaking manner, this patent is set to pave the way for not only enhanced Bluetooth communication but also future wireless communication technologies.

The cornerstone of this innovation lies in its simplified demodulation process, achieved through a Limiter-Discriminator Integrator (LDI) receiver. This approach not only ensures minimal complexity but also delivers a remarkable performance boost, offering a significant advantage over traditional methods. It's a leap forward in achieving high efficiency and practicality in Bluetooth communications, especially tailored for the BR and BLE standards.

Tackling Tomorrow’s Challenges Today

In an exclusive insight to The Globe and Mail, Dr. Bazzi also sheds light on the pressing issues facing future Bluetooth standards, particularly emphasizing the urgency to fortify security and privacy measures. With vulnerabilities that could potentially allow attackers to compromise device communications by exploiting session keys, Bazzi’s work also underscores the critical need for robust protections in the evolving landscape of Bluetooth technology.

As we stand on the brink of wireless communication’s next evolution, Dr. Ahmad Bazzi’s contributions emerge not just as technological breakthroughs but as beacons guiding the way toward a more connected, efficient, and secure future. Stay tuned as we continue to follow this remarkable journey, reshaping the way we think about Bluetooth and beyond.

About Ahmad Bazzi

Ahmad Bazzi was born in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on the 3rd of October 1991. He received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from EURECOM, Sophia Antipolis, France, in 2017, and his MSc degree (summa cum laude) in wireless communication systems (SAR) from Centrale Supelec, in 2014. He is currently a research scientist with New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi, and NYU WIRELESS, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, contributing to integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). Before that, he was the Algorithm and Signal Processing Team Leader at CEVA-DSP, Sophia Antipolis, leading the work on Wi-Fi (802.11ax) and Bluetooth high-performant PHY modems, OFDMA MAC schedulers, and RF-related issues. He is an inventor with several patents involving intellectual property of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth products, all of which have been implemented and sold to key clients. Since 2018, he has been publishing lectures on the YouTube platform under his name ”Ahmad Bazzi”, where his channel contains mathematical, algorithmic, and programming topics, with 285,000 subscribers and more than 17 million views, as of January 2024. He was awarded a CIFRE Scholarship from the Association Nationale Recherche Technologies (ANRT) France, in 2014, in collaboration with RivieraWaves (now CEVA-DSP). He was nominated for the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) 2016. He received the Silver Plate Creator Award from YouTube, in 2022, for his 100,000 subscriber milestone. He was awarded an exemplary reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Communications in 2022 and an exemplary reviewer for the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters in 2022. He served as a TPC member and a reviewer for many leading international conferences. He was selected amongst the top 200 Arab creators for 2023.
