Springfield, Ohio Celebrates Haitian Flag Day: Uniting Communities and Celebrating Cultural Diversity

Springfield, Ohio, witnessed a historic event on May 18, 2023 as the Haitian community came together to commemorate Flag Day. This significant occasion left an indelible mark on the city, showcasing the unity and cultural contributions of the Haitian community. Held at Springfield City Hall, the commemorative ceremony included the raising of the Haitian flag and an official proclamation by Mayor Warren R. Copeland, designating May 18 as Haitian Flag Day in Springfield. The festivities continued at Veteran's Park, attracting an impressive crowd of 2,500 to 3,000 people throughout the day. Attendees had the opportunity to savor a diverse array of authentic Haitian dishes. The success of the event, organized by the radio NDL New Diaspora Live and multiple partners and organizations in the community, exceeded expectations. The overwhelming positivity and participation of both Haitian visitors and Springfield residents demonstrated the significance and impact of this celebration.

Springfield has long embraced and celebrated the Haitian community, fostering an environment of acceptance and support. Guerline Etienne, owner of T-Guer Top Model, expressed her enjoyment in building a close-knit community and providing Haitians with an opportunity to reconnect with their roots. Etienne offered clothing and jewelry adorned with the Haitian flag and motifs, all handmade by herself.

Copeland said in his proclamation that Springfield recognizes the economic and cultural contributions the Haitian immigrant population has made to the city.

Miguelito Jerome of the New Diaspora Live Haitian radio station in Springfield said the ceremony celebrated the uniting of communities and the preservation and promotion of Haitian culture in Springfield during his speech at the City Hall

“I stand before you with a heart filled with gratitude and appreciation for each and every one of you who has contributed to the journey of progress,” Jerome said.

Gilbert Fortil, the owner of Haitian radio station NDL New Diaspora Live, shared his gratitude for the city's support and encouragement in organizing the festival. The collaboration aimed to foster appreciation for Haitian culture among the broader population.
