Head of The Charles Regatta Leverages SIMUL8 Simulation to Navigate and Avoid Race-Day Obstacles

By: PRLog
PR Log - Oct 20, 2011 - Head Of The Charles® Regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event, today announced that organizers will use simulation software from SIMUL8 Corporation for race-day planning and logistics. A first-ever technological innovation for one of the world's oldest and most popular regattas, SIMUL8 will reduce the excess time rowers spend in the water navigating the tricky series of bridges and docks that can easily turn into backlogs. Staff at the 47th Regatta on October 22 to 23 will also use SIMUL8 to streamline coordination of the large race day volunteer group that tops 1,500.

Each Head of the Charles has a number of variables – weather, wait times in the water, a tough course, collisions, turning boats around, large numbers of participants – that affect the race. Every year has the potential to bring about unexpected conditions that can add twists to the logistics. Two years ago, for example, an unexpected snow storm slowed the race down on the second day. For the nearly 9,000  athletes competing, delays at any point in the race result in longer times in the water, which can lead to hypothermia, fatigue and other performance-impairing conditions.

SIMUL8, which is traditionally used to improve business performance through simulation, is drawing on the same type of scenario-based forecasting businesses use to provide logistics and race-management data for the Head of the Charles. There are a number of areas that the organizers expect immediate improvements, such as the backlogs that traditionally plague the 20 docks as the rowers both launch and end the race. With SIMUL8, Head of the Charles Regatta staff can manage the dock activity, moving rowers to other docks if needed and keeping the flow moving.

"Using SIMUL8 is an exciting new addition to the way the HOCR is managed," said Mason D. Cox, Assistant Director, Head Of The Charles Regatta. "No matter how much we try to plan and anticipate variables that impact the event every year, it is next to impossible to have a full day without delays or other scheduling shifts. With SIMUL8 we're literally entering a new era of race management."
