Miss National US Inc Joins United Way in Three-Year Effort to Recruit One Million Reading Volunteers

By: PRLog
PR Log - May 21, 2012 - AUSTIN, TX – Today, Miss National US Incorporated (MNUS) joins the United Way three-year effort to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors with a commitment to recruit 15,000 volunteers in locations across USA.

United Way is making this major commitment as part of its education goal to cut by half the number of young people who drop out of high school and the findings from Voices for the Common Good: America Speaks out on Education. This report is based on a listening tour of communities across the country, focus groups and a national survey on the U.S. education system. The national poll found that 91 percent of respondents believe that the community must take a greater responsibility for what is happening with our children.

“We know that education is the cornerstone to a productive and successful life,” said Mei Cobb, Vice-President of Volunteer and Employee Engagement at United Way Worldwide. “Miss National US Incorporated’s commitment to volunteer leadership, and support of our goal of recruiting one million readers, tutors and mentors, further underscores the need for greater community involvement in the education of America’s young people.”

MNUS national and state titleholders are not just beauty queens; they are active leaders within their communities that dedicate their reigns to community service and academic excellence. This partnership speaks to the similarities MNUS and United Way share in their combined efforts to make our communities better through our youth.

“We are ecstatic to be a part of this campaign,” stated Brittney Alexander, President and Executive Director of Miss National US Incorporated. “Education and volunteerism are two core principles of our organization and we are honored to be invited to join the efforts of United Way helping young people across the country realize their full potential through the power of education.”

MNUS is committed to helping children in elementary, middle school and high school age groups read proficiently and build the skills, knowledge and attitudes as they continue their education through each level. MNUS will be reaching out to other like organizations seeking volunteers and mentors to join the cause as well as fund raising for the United Way programs. Titleholders and staff will commit service to their area schools over the next few years doing their part in helping the children in our communities exceed expectations in their education.
