Estes Audiology and the Georgetown Sertoma Club Collect Used Hearing Aids Worth $31 K for Recycling

By: PRLog
PR Log - Jul 11, 2012 - Approximately 70 used hearing aids were collected by the staff of Estes Audiology and members of the Sertoma Club of Georgetown throughout the month of May and during their 3rd Annual Hearing Aid Roundup held in Georgetown/Sun City on Saturday, May 13, 2012. Each year since 2010, Estes Audiology of Georgetown/Sun City, New Braunfels, and Boerne and the Georgetown Sertoma Club have joined forces to collect used hearing aids during the month of May – a month recently designated as Better Hearing Month by the Georgetown City Council.

“We again want to thank the communities in Georgetown, Sun City, New Braunfels, and Boerne for bringing hearing healthcare to the forefront and for donating their unused hearing aids.  It is our belief through the Hearing Aid Roundup, recycling efforts in Central Texas will become more and more of an accepted practice.  Everyone has the right to hear and through these donations, this belief becomes a reality,” said Dr. Estes.

“Finally, a special thanks to the wonderfully and tireless volunteers of the Sertoma Club-Georgetown.  Their enthusiasm and dedication to improving hearing healthcare in Central Texas makes this drive a joy every year.”

Jim Wilson, Speech & Hearing Director of the Georgetown Sertoma Club added, “We are indeed so happy to partner with Dr. Soriya Estes and her team again this year so that others may receive hearing assistance through the SHARP Sertoma program.”

The Sertoma Club is a national organization that focuses on assisting people with hearing health issues and on educating communities on hearing health. Sertoma clubs throughout North America sponsor the Sertoma Hearing Aid Recycling Program also known as S.H.A.R.P. – a program that collects used hearing aids so that they can be refurbished and given to those economically challenged.

The donation value of these used hearing aids is estimated to be more than $31K.  These hearing aids will be donated to the UT-Austin Speech and Hearing Clinic for the S.H.A.R.P. Program.

“This is a marvelous symbiotic effort of recycling a valuable resource  - hearing aids,” stated Dr. Craig Champlin, Professor and Chair of Department of Communication Services and Disorders – UT Austin.  “The donated instruments will be refurbished and then distributed to our Sertoma clients who cannot otherwise afford this important technology.  Indeed, the recipients are deeply appreciative of the efforts of our colleagues at Estes Audiology. Additionally, the hearing aids will be used as training devices. Student will be able to disassemble them and discover how they work.  This practical knowledge will enable more efficient, effective and even economical hearing-aid repair.”
