Southwestern College (http://swc.edu) takes pride in knowing that in a highly competitive job market, their graduates are well-positioned to find the career of their dreams. The school offers Master’s Degrees in Counseling and Art Therapy/Counseling and also has certificate programs to prepare students with a variety of skills that employers seek when hiring graduates.

The degree designation of Master’s of Arts in Art therapy/Counseling is an unusual one, as it allows graduates to be licensed as an art therapist, a counselor or both. The school feels that it is an important distinction, as only three states have licensing specifically for Art Therapy. By ensuring students have the proper credentials for both, alumni can seek positions in all 50 states and be able to secure licensure.

Southwestern College President, Dr. Jim Nolan, admits that there are some who might not approve of the dual designation. He has encountered professionals who believe that Art Therapists should seek only those positions, and not accept counseling careers. However, he is confident that the benefits of the program prove themselves.

“I have to tell you, Southwestern College has a lot of graduates from the Art Therapy/Counseling program who would disagree vigorously with that point of view. Many of them work as Art Therapists, and many are actively using art therapy while working as a Licensed Professional Counselor. They are extraordinarily appreciative that they were able to earn the credentials as both Art Therapist and Counselor, and have probably five to ten times the number of job options they would have had if restricted only to Art Therapy jobs.”

He also stresses that the degree is only one way students can position themselves for a strong entry into the job market. The school also offers six Professional Certificate Programs that expand on the strong base and make graduates desirable by firms looking for a particular specialty.

When asked if there were any other factors that he would want potential students to consider Dr. Nolan added, “Factor in, too, that you will be studying in the second largest art market in the United States. Santa Fe is surrounded by the kind of natural beauty that attracted Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams, so when you come to Southwestern College, you’ve chosen for yourself an exciting graduate school life, and excellent career options.”

Southwestern College is a graduate level institution that offers Master’s Degrees in Counseling and Art Therapy in a holistic learning environment. Southwestern is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).
