In response to workers’ demands for a listening ear on unsafe work practices in the construction industry, blogs providing anecdotal stories and how-to advice are popping up to provide more publicity.

Events like the 5,000-strong march in Melbourne last month against lax safety standards in the construction industry are prompting a rise in blogs aimed at safety in the workplace.

Specifically zoning in on the construction industry, blogs like www.construction-safety-australia.tumblr.com – launched today – aim to disseminate more information to the industry in a bid to raise safety standards.

The blog focuses on providing workers in the industry with updates on relevant news stories and announcements from various authorities. The design was kept clean and simple, with large writing, and is currently without advertisements in a bid to keep the focus on sharing facts.

“Knowledge is power.” Says Jake Formosa, spokesperson for the owners of the blog. “There’s a desire for more information out there. Construction workers often think they are operating in a silo with no support. We hope this blog connects them to the safety industry as a whole.”

The blog focuses on stories rather than policies or long-winded how-to articles. The 5 most recent blog posts focus on incidences occurring around Australia and use narrative to explain best practices that can be understood from the story for real world application.

In the future, the blog aims to connect workers around particular issues and profile products, services and personnel who can assist in keeping construction sites safe.
