Seniors and Online Dating Among Hot Topics of Panel Discussion
PRLog - Jun. 3, 2014 - NEW YORK -- Senior citizens and their dating habits are no longer private family conversations. Instead, it’s a hot topic of the panel discussion event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Psychology Department of the City College of New York.  This and other matters of New Media and Social Relationships will be addressed at The Colin Powell School of Civic and Global Leadership on June 5th.  Harold (Hal) Spielman, author of Suddenly Solo, A Lifestyle Road Map for the Mature Widowed and Divorced Man (www.suddenlysolo.org), will be using his market research data to punch holes in many of the myths the media has created about relationships. He will be joined by Zack Geller, PhD, Adjunct Prof at CCNY, and Leora Traub, PhD, Asst. Professor of Psychology at Pace University.

“I am delighted to be participating in this prestigious event,” said Spielman. “We often think of social media as being relevant only to the young, however, my research studies prove that Boomers and seniors are utilizing new media to expand their social horizons, leading to both a new sexual revolution and a new avenue to increase meaningful relationships.”

Spielman’s book points out that 22% of those 55 and over who are in a monogamous relationship met online.

“It makes sense,” he continued. “All the benefits of online dating are attractive to mature people as well. And while this age category did not grow up with computers, and therefore had a different social structure for dating in their younger years, we must not forget that this generation did push our society towards the sexual revolution. So while society stereotypically may view people of a certain age as having set traits, my data often proves those ideas to be myths.”

According to Spielman’s surveys, conducted with 1,600 widowed and divorced men and women over 55:

66% of women and 82% of men feel that sex is important in maintaining a relationship

70% of mature women said it was okay for them to carry condoms

Men expect to have some sexual activity after the 3rd date, women not until the 5th, however…

45% of women said they had sex with an acquaintance “just because they felt like it”

These and an array of other statistics, humorous vignettes and insightful tips are presented in Spielman’s book which has been featured on The Today Show, in  The New York Times, AARPMagazine and many other national media outlets.

Spielman, a CCNY graduate and the founder of the marketing research firm McCollum Spielman Worldwide, decided to write his book after the loss of his wife of 32 years. Finding little resources for men who were seeking guidance on how to resume living and loving again, he conducted studies to find out how both and women in this mature age group made the transition. His book led to both a successful website and radio show. For more information, www.suddenlysolo.org.
