Mother's Day Gift Idea--Help Other Mothers This Mother's Day

Afya Foundation to help deliver 10,000 healthy babies in Ghana
PRLog - April 16, 2015 - NEW YORK -- Afya Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to helping improve health care in Africa and The Caribbean, is teaming up with Ghana’s Second Lady Matilda Amissah-Arthur and Afya volunteers to create 10,000 kits for healthier deliveries in Ghana before U.S. Mother’s Day 2015.

“In a pilot study, we provided 60 kits to birth attendants in West Africa and all mothers and infants came through delivery healthy,” said Danielle Butin, M.P.H., founder and executive director of Afya Foundation. “Proper medical supplies can have significant impact on deliveries, increasing the chance that mother and child will survive childbirth.”

In developing nations, one in 13 women die from complications from pregnancy or delivery. According to a Ghana Health Service report, 120 babies of every 1,000 deliveries died. Ghana has committed to reducing maternal and child mortality rates by 75 percent, as part of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Project. It has implemented several programs since 2001 to improve maternal and children’s health, including mid-wife training and access to basic maternal health facilities and supplies.

“I look forward to greeting the arrival of the Afya Foundation container of birth kits in Accra,” said Ghana’s Second Lady Amissah-Arthur, who is actively engaged in reducing infant morality in her country. “The birth of a baby should be a happy day. Through a coordinated effort, which includes maternal health supplies from Afya, we can help deliver more healthy babies – and bring smiles to the faces of families.”

Afya Foundation’s birth kits include a sterile equipment needed for delivery and illustrated birthing directions. Each $25 kit will help support one delivery.
