Automated Vital Signs Solutions from Welch Allyn Help Ensure Accurate Readings, Enable Early Detection in the Battle to Curb Hypertension across Canada

Welch Allyn, a leading medical diagnostic device company that is a division of Hill-Rom (NYSE:HRC), recently introduced three new automated vital signs solutions that can help healthcare providers across Canada capture vitals accurately and efficiently, and detect hypertension early in ambulatory care settings.

These devices align with Hypertension Canada’s Canadian Hypertension Education Program (CHEP) guidelines for accurate blood pressure management that cite measurement using electronic devices as the preferred method over auscultation for accurate office blood pressure measurement2. The guidelines also cite 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure measurement as the preferred method for diagnostic confirmation3.

According to Hypertension Canada, a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization representing over 50 years of expertise in the field of hypertension, approximately 1 in 3 people with hypertension have uncontrolled blood pressure, including high risk patients with diabetes and kidney disease. Almost 1 in 5 people living with hypertension are unaware of their condition.

As healthcare providers across Canada continue to leverage new technologies to improve patient outcomes and drive efficiencies in the delivery of care, the ability to obtain accurate and comprehensive patient data more efficiently at the point of care is critical. Vital signs captured during routine exams, specifically blood pressure, are important measurements in the early detection of many treatable diseases, including hypertension— one of the leading risk factors of cardiovascular disease1.

The Welch Allyn Connex® Spot Monitor is an easy-to-use, full-color, touchscreen monitor that provides comprehensive and accurate patient vital signs documentation using a single device. Combining leading vital signs parameter technologies with the flexibility for use across patient populations spanning neonatal through adult, the Connex Spot Monitor helps ensure the accuracy of captured vital signs, including:

The Welch Allyn ProBP™ 2400 measures blood pressure using three different modes. An automatic Single Reading mode provides clinicians with an easy-to-use option for quick results with the push of a button. The device also has an automatic 3-Reading Average Mode that can similarly be activated with the simple push of a button. This mode provides the average of multiple readings to help clinicians account for white coat hypertension. In addition, a third ProBP 2400 mode allows clinicians to operate the device in a manual method using a stethoscope when auscultatory readings are desired.

The Welch Allyn ABPM 7100 is a next-generation, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) device that uses BHS A/A validated oscillometric technology to help enhance blood pressure management and effectively diagnose hypertension. When used together with the office-based blood pressure averaging feature on the Welch Allyn Connex Spot Monitor (CSM) clinicians have the option to capture and analyze multiple automated blood pressure readings for their patients during one visit or over several hours for more complete and accurate measurements.

“Manual vital signs measurements, specifically blood pressure, can vary based on technique of the examiner, situational anxiety and attributes of the patient’s health, as well as activities the patient has participated in during the day of the exam,” said Alton Shader, president, Welch Allyn. “Capturing multiple automated blood pressure readings over a 24-hour period, or an average of multiple readings captured in the physician’s office with a single parameter or multi-parameter vital signs device during

the same visit, can help mitigate these anomalies and give physicians a more complete and accurate picture of the patient’s overall health. This can significantly aid in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions like hypertension.”
