Event Highlights:  Works from Pony Box Dance Theatre will express Conformity and Identity, "The Line" and "The Collective".

“The Line” explores the phenomenon of Conformity, and the eternal tension between the demands of the “Group” vs. the imperatives of the “Individual”. It is a dance for seven men that examines the wellspring of self-expression as the vital tangent of Group endeavor. Featuring an original score by Douglas Hammond, whose compositions have been featured in film, television and commercials, and a unique eco-sculpture of Annette Heully that floats above the dancers, representing the consciousness of the group.

“The Collective” is the hypnotic, sensual, signature choreographic work of the Pony Box Dance Theatre's repertoire. Here, the seven men express the interplay between individual and collective desire, the social facade and the person 'under the mask'.

Lula Washington Dance Theatre will perform three works by three choreographers: “Tribute” by Lula Washington; “Together” by Tamica Washington-Miller, with live jazz by the Marcus L. Miller ensemble; and “Communion” by famed choreographer, Donald Byrd.

“Tribute” is a new work in progress by Lula Washington that uses the music of Earth, Wind and Fire to look back at the dance styles of the 70s and 80s.

Tamica Washington-Miller will perform “Together”, which looks at two lovers from disparate worlds who are torn apart by circumstances, but love prevails. “Communion”, by Donald Byrd, celebrates a matriarchal figure who passes on her wisdom and powers to her four young female acolytes.
