Helping Women Discover Creativity – And Themselves

By: PRLog
"Studio Stories" Offers Intimate Portraits of Lives Transformed Through Art
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Sept. 30, 2016 - PRLog -- When artist Lauren Rader begins inviting women into her studio for classes in creativity, she has no idea what she is about to unleash. What the women soon discover is that the path to creativity leads deep within – to hidden thoughts, buried memories, and dramatic life changes.

Rader relates their intensely personal journeys in her new book, Studio Stories: Illuminating Our Lives through Art, due to be released October 1 by Shanti Arts Publishing.

The real-life characters of Studio Stories include a teacher, a doctor, a lobbyist and an elderly widow, all drawn by a yearning to create art. As self-expression leads to self-discovery, the women's creative forays help them come to terms with a miscarriage years earlier, abuse suffered as a child, and a teenage son's battle with brain cancer.

Along with these intimate portraits, Rader shares insights from a lifetime of teaching and artistry, and from her daily walks along the Potomac with her dog Wiley.

Studio Stories is a powerful declaration of everyone's innate right and ability to create, and a testament to creativity's power to transform.

Tom Ashbrook, host, NPR's On Point: "There is so much power in these stories. The power of art. The power of women. The beautiful power of women in the act of creating. These are stories of courage and liberation."

Michael Roth, president, Wesleyan University; former president, California College of the Arts: "Studio Stories runs deep. It offers readers close encounters with art-making and its persistent power to help us see who we are and might yet become."

Karen Wise, former clinical director, Boston Institute of Art Therapy: "If you're an art therapist, you'll marvel at Lauren's natural gift for unleashing the transformative powers inherent in the creative process."

Cecilia Capuzzi Simon, contributing writer, The New York Times: "Lauren's gentle coaching brought back to life the artist in me that I long ago extinguished. This book can help do that for so many others too. It is beautiful, poetic, and inspiring."

Rader, of Bethesda, Maryland, began creating and teaching art as a teenager.  Her works in stone, clay, oils, and pastels have been exhibited in California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Texas, and Washington, D.C.  She has taught children from elementary through high school, and in 2005 began offering the adult classes that inspired Studio Stories.
