Rock Star, Actress, LGBT activist and Gay Icon Cher appeared for the first time Sunday night at San Francisco’s largest gay-owned venue, OASIS Nightclub & Cabaret, to rally drag queens and the LGBTQ community to support Hillary Clinton for President. Over $200,000 was raised by the Hillary Victory Fund.
Cher told the capacity crowd that “with a Trump Presidency I’d be worried for anyone who wasn’t white” including “anyone with a suntan.”
Known for shooting from the hip, Cher started by saying ,”I know Hillary isn’t perfect.” She went on to relay a personal story of a conversation with Clinton about “why people think you’re such a hard-ass.” “Way back when Bill asked her to fix healthcare” she recalled, “the Republican’s attacked her so personally she had to grit her teeth or she would’ve cried.” She shared that Hillary confided, “I did’t want to let them have the satisfaction.”
Powerful women in music and celebrity have long been celebrated in the LGBT community and inspired many a drag number. Cher, whose career spans 6 decades with hits in each, became politically active in LGBT rights when her child Chaz Bono came out as gay in 1997 and subsequently as transgender in 2005. Cher has been an outspoken advocate ever since.
Cher was joined onstage by her best known impersonator, reality television star Chad Michaels (winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 1), at the San Francisco cultural landmark. Michaels wowed the crowd with a lip-sync of Cher’s 2013 anthem, “Woman’s World.” Michael’s will be back on the OASIS stage for an entire night of Cher Tributes on November 5th (http://sfoasis.com/event.cfm?id=167196).
After the raging success of the fundraiser the San Francisco Democratic Part and the Hillary for President Campaign said they may be returning soon to OASIS with an official Election Watching Party November 8th.OASIS co-owners and San Francisco Drag Legends Heklina and D’Arcy Drollinger hosted the night and were overjoyed to have the Queen of Pop grace their nightclub. “We like to think of our place as a clubhouse for the community,” said Heklina, who opened OASIS in early 2015. “I never expected the Queen to show up at the clubhouse.”Photos by: Gareth Gooch
