Journey to parenthood: family building options for LGBTQs

By: PRLog
CENTRAL, Hong Kong - Oct. 31, 2017 - PRLog -- Families come in many different forms. There are diverse ways to build a family from sperm donation, egg donation, gestational surrogate to adoption.

Hundreds of thousands of children are being raised by lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender parents in the United States. The society has recognized equality in parenthood and supported individuals create a family regardless of sexual orientation.

In contrast, in Asia, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people do not have an equal access to fertility treatment to create a family.  Societies do not embrace sexual diversities. LGBTQ faces discrimination and challenges. In many Asian countries, it is impossible or it is extremely difficult for single women, single men, the same-sex couples to receive in-vitro fertilization or any kind of fertility treatments.

An open access to such fertility treatments and services in the United States attracts LGBTQ Asians.

Here are family building options for those:

Sperm donation

Single women and lesbian couples have the option of using sperm from one of their family members, friends or from a sperm bank. A known sperm donor is required to visit a treating in-vitro fertilization physician's office and undergo a routine screening and testing including communicable disease and semen analysis. A known sperm donation agreement should be prepared by a fertility lawyer. Or, sperm can be purchased from an online sperm bank in the United States and be shipped to a treating physician's office.

Egg donation

Single men and gay couples commonly use an anonymous egg donor. In the United States, a donor undergoes comprehensive medical screening and testing as well as psychological evaluation to be determined to be an eligible donor. An anonymous egg donation agreement is prepared by a lawyer who specializes in family planning and reproduction.

Another option is to receive eggs from a family member or friend. A known donor also is required to undergo testing and screening. A known egg donation agreement is prepared by a fertility lawyer.

The other option is to purchase frozen donor eggs. Using frozen donor eggs have benefits: simpler process, less expensive, and flexibility. However, in general, many people prefer fresh donor eggs to frozen donor eggs.

Gestational surrogate

Single men, gay couples, and a woman who is unable to bear a child, can build a family through a gestational carrier. There are numerous surrogate agencies that help find a gestational carrier. The gestational carrier does not have genetic relationship to the child, and intended parent(s) has(have) full parentage rights. A gestational surrogate agreement should be prepared by a fertility lawyer.

Surrogacy laws are different from state-to-state. California allows a gestational surrogacy for all intended parents regardless of marital status and or sexual orientation to establish legal parental rights. However, there are states that permit it only for legally married couples. Surrogacy laws are constantly evolving and changing. It is important to work with a lawyer specializing in reproductive law.
