Moms of Black Boys United, Inc. joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement

By: PRLog
MOBB United pledges to work with moms everywhere to educate them and those who have an influence in their sons' lives on how to be the best advocates on behalf Black boys across the country.
NEW YORK - Nov. 27, 2017 - PRLog -- Moms of Black Boys United has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 28th, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Moms of Black Boys United, a national coalition of moms united by passion to protect their Black sons from misperceptions and police brutality, joined #GivingTuesday in hopes to continue raising the funds needed to provide critical training and support to moms and sons. Over the past few months, the organization been requested by school districts, police departments and other interested parties to help them better train their employees to improve interactions with Black boys and diverse communities at large. As a new organization, this is M.O.B.B. United's first  #GivingTuesday, and for the past 18 months the organization has been largely self-funded. Over the past year, the organization has provided financial and emotional support to families of victims of police brutality and provided seminars that equip moms and sons to prevent negative encounters and navigate educational and criminal justice systems. The organization hopes to raise at least $20,000 to expand outreach to moms and sons in local communities that need resources and support most. The organization is also starting a scholarship fund in the name of 15-yr-old Darrius Smith who was killed by a U.S. Customs Officer in Arcadia, CA this past May.

M.O.B.B. United Founder Depelsha McGruder says, "As moms of Black boys, our biggest fear is that society won't view our sons through the loving eyes that we do. Black males are routinely assumed to be troublemakers in school and potential criminals on the street. That's why we're doing all we can to change those misperceptions and to equip families to prevent negative encounters and to know how to respond when they occur. We are committed to doing our part but need financial support to continue our work."
