World Creativity And Innovation Day A Historic Moment At The United Nations

By: PRLog
UN's Acknowledgement of WCID Signals Importance of Creativity and Innovation in Helping Create a Better World.
NEW YORK - April 23, 2018 - PRLog -- April 21 was a significant day for artists, creatives and innovators.

The UN announced it has officially endorsed World Creativity and Innovation Day (#WCID) which is meant to "to encourage creative multidisciplinary thinking to help us achieve the sustainable future we want."

Emmy-winning filmmaker, Ms. Lisa Russell, who produces films and curates artistic performances for UN agencies calls the day "historic."

"I am incredibly proud of the work that I have been honored to do as a filmmaker and curator at the UN for the past 15 years to help translate dense policy and program language into digestible content for a wider audience," states Russell. "As an artist who not only produces creative content but is a regular attendee at UN events and gatherings, I am excited for this historic day and hope it inspires opportunities for artists and creatives to sit at the decision making table at the UN where important conversations are taking place regarding the future of humanity.

Russell is a regular keynote speaker and is a strong advocate for institutional credibility of artists at the UN. From 2014-2015, she attended several Town Hall meetings at the UN when the language was being debated and discussed for the writing of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals.

"There was only myself and a radio personality from Nigeria who were there advocating for inclusion of "arts" and "creativity" in the final language of the SDGs," Russell states. "Although there was support by the other participants, it didn't work out as we had hoped."

Out of the 15,539 words in the SDG Outcome Document that set the stage for how the world will work to create a more sustainable future by 2030, "arts" and "artists" are never mentioned and "creativity" is only mentioned twice.

On April 21, however, the UN called the creative economy "a highly transformative sector of the world economy in terms of income generation, job creation and export earnings."

According to a 2015 report  by UNESCO, the creative economy employed "30 million people worldwide and generated $2.25 trillion in revenue—or 3 percent of the world's GDP—in 2013."

In celebration of #WCID, Russell is premiering #Create2030, her new UN-funded film and creative campaign to engage artists and creatives in meeting the SDGs.

Funded by the UN Secretary General's SDG Advocacy Group, the five minute film is narrated by Laolu Senbanjo (a Nigerian visual artist whose body painting work has been seen on Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz and others, who is also a former human rights attorney) with music composed by Ray Angry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Angry) (an American keyboardist, record producer, and composer who works with such legendary acts as The Roots, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, Robbie Williams, D'Angelo and others.)

#Create2030 is meant to be a call for creative content and an online networking tool between artists, creatives and innovators with the UN. #Create2030 is powered by StoryShifter, a new entertainment platform for the social good.  "Curators for a Day" (http://www.instagram.com/storyshifter) are UN/NGO communications experts, a Hollywood screenwriter and producer, an academic studying media and climate change literacy and others who are offering one consultation to artist of their choice to discuss ideas for sharing their work with a wider, global audience.

Please note:  Russell, #Create2030 artists and UN experts are available for interviews.
