"What Mercy Looks Like" Wins Gold Remi at WorldFest-Houston Film Festival

By: PRLog
Hurricane Harvey was one of the costliest disasters to hit the Texas Gulf Coast. This documentary features the volunteers who came from across the country to help Houstonians rebuild their lives after the flood waters receded.
CYPRESS, Texas - April 30, 2018 - PRLog -- PrettyWork Creative's short documentary, "What Mercy Looks Like" received a Gold Remi at the 51st WorldFest Houston International Independent Film Festival's award gala held Saturday, April 28, 2018. The film and the award are the first for filmmakers and business partners, Lisa N. Alexander and husband Elgin Alexander.

The film that started out as a promotional video for Mercy Response—an organization formed to assist those impacted by natural disasters—quickly turned into something more.

The couple followed teams of volunteers through debris-filled streets for six weeks post-Hurricane Harvey. The Alexanders documented the hard work and generosity of strangers who came from across the country to help Houstonians rebuild their lives.

Michael Lehmann, senior pastor of Trinity Vineyard Church praised the couple for their efforts. The Cypress, Texas church was the base camp for hundreds of volunteers and tons of food and equipment.

Lehmann had this to say about the couple on a recent Facebook post, "You came early in the morning and stayed till late in the day. You loaded up your equipment, showed up to film and plans would change. You navigated wretched conditions to capture the story. You spent countless hours editing and cutting film. You never complained. You never expected anything in return. You never quit until the finished product was award-worthy. The documentary will live on in history, telling the story of the selfless volunteers who showed us what mercy looks like."

According to WorldFest, there were over 4,500 entries from over 43 countries and only 10-to-15 percent of those entries were awarded a Remi.

Festival founder and organizer Hunter Todd told award recipients they should be proud of their work because it survived the judges "egg timer test." According to Todd, long films were given a 10-minute view test, shorter films a five-minute test. "Some films didn't even make the one-minute mark," he told filmmakers.

Proud to have survived the "egg timer test," the couple has launched a new division of their brand called PrettyWork Studios. "This is where we'll tell stories like "What Mercy Looks Like," Lisa commented.

The documentary is now available on Amazon.com.
