UNCF College Tour Stops in Chicago, Awarding Local Students Thousands in College Scholarships

Hundreds of students expected to attend the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Empower Me Tour
CHICAGO - Oct. 31, 2018 - PRLog -- Hundreds of Chicago high school graduating seniors will be given the opportunity to apply for thousands of dollars in scholarships on Wednesday, November 7 at the University of Illinois Chicago Forum during the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Empower Me Tour (EMT). EMT is a free, traveling college-and-career-readiness roadshow that provides a platform for high school students to earn on-site scholarships and admission to the nation's top historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

UNCF is the largest scholarship provider to students of color, awarding $100 million annually in scholarships to more than 10,000 students across the country. Chicago native, Leah Freeney, has benefited from multiple UNCF scholarships. "These scholarships gave me the ability to be able to press forward and pay for my education," says the 20-year-old. "Thanks to UNCF, the scholarships and internships that they offer, I am one step closer to receiving my degree," she adds. Freeney, a graduate of Westinghouse College Prep, is now a junior at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Through partnerships with Chicago Public School District, parents, national sponsors Wells Fargo, Target, P&G and FedEx, and a host of strong local sponsors, EMT offers access to information and recruiters from HBCUs, college prep workshops, dynamic presenters, and award-winning educational experts. Students will have an opportunity to apply for college admission, financial aid and scholarships including the EMT Merit Scholarship, presented in partnership with Target on the spot.

The EMT is Wednesday, November 7 at 8:30 a.m. at the University of Illinois Chicago Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL.  The FREE, parent workshop "How to pay for college?" is Tuesday, November 6 at 6 p.m. at Walter H. Dyett High School for the Arts 555 E. 51st Street, Chicago, IL. Other cities on the tour include Fort Worth, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Milwaukee, WI; Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA.
