Incisive New Book – A Girl Called Harmony

By: PRLog

Harmony Couillard's just released memoir acknowledges the very real issues of mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction, sexual abuse and lack of family structure and the effects on children.

PROSPECT, Conn. - April 14, 2021 - PRLog -- A Girl Called Harmony is a heart wrenching true story about one girl's survival and adaptability of one of the most turbulent and lewd child abuse cases in rural, northern America. Harmony lived in a world of neglect, abuse, abduction and abandonment. Her parents suffered from mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction often disguised as a bohemian lifestyle. Abandoned and homeless by age 13, Harmony finds herself in a homeless shelter and the foster care system. While adults continue to struggle with their demons, Harmony's journey through exploitation and darkness to light will both horrify and inspire.

Born to a schizophrenic father and an alcoholic mother, baby Harmony staves off hunger by eating dry cat food under the kitchen table. After her father falls deeper into mental illness and leaves, her mother seeks refuge in enablers and on a hippie commune in the lonely, cold rural mountains in northern America. Her mother marries a deranged drug dealer, and they produce two Littles. As her mother falls deeper into addiction, Harmony is abducted by the drug dealing stepfather, and they live  in hiding.  Depraved memories of neglect, abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, maltreatment and loss unravel as 16 year old Harmony finds stability in a safe foster family and a new journal.

Child sexual abuse reports are on the rise, especially amid lockdown orders due to Coronavirus. Child sexual abuse is a public health problem of enormous consequence. One in 10 children will be sexually abused before age 18.  It is far more prevalent than most people realize. 60% of child abuse victim never tell anyone.

Harmony now lives in South Florida with her husband, son, two dogs, one cat, and a hamster. She has been a teacher for over twenty-six years and holds a master of science degree in reading education. She currently works as a reading specialist for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. As a child advocate, Harmony volunteers as a court-appointed guardian ad litem for the state of Florida. Her advocacy work for children and people who suffer from the wounds of neglect, abuse, abduction, and abandonment highlights her passion to help others understand the importance of a mindful family structure, balanced and healthy living, faith, and finding one's unique brilliance and inner story.
