Lead orthodontist at the center, Dr. Victor Schacher, has launched the new service out of concern that some may not fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of clear alignment devices. It is designed to ensure that patients receive a professional orthodontic assessment before proceeding with treatment.

Traditional braces involve the fixing of small brackets to a patient’s teeth. The brackets are joined by wires, and slowly alter the alignment of teeth within the mouth. The procedure is usually done for cosmetic purposes, and can take anywhere from 12 to 36 months, depending on the degree of correction required.

The appearance of braces, along with the time taken to complete treatment, has long been considered one of the drawbacks of this approach. The Invisalign devices now offered by Schacher Orthodontics seek to address many of these concerns. Consisting of a clear plastic mold that fits over teeth, they are more aesthetically pleasing and, in some cases, can produce results more quickly.

While Dr. Schacher agrees that clear aligners are useful for some patients, the orthodontist stresses that the devices might not be suitable in all cases. Traditional braces cause teeth to move at a ‘bodily’ level. This means that the teeth actually move through the bone to their new position. In comparison, clear aligners ‘tip’ teeth, so while the angle of the teeth might be changed, their actual location within the bone is not.

The practice suggests that patients considering such treatment should have a professional, orthodontic assessment to determine if Invisalign will be appropriate. The new service involves taking x-rays and molds of a patient’s mouth, which are then studied to determine whether clear aligners will be sufficient to affect the desired result.

Orthodontists require years of additional study and experience that general dentists do not usually complete. Schacher Orthodontics encourages patients to seek an expert assessment prior to undergoing orthodontic treatment, which will ensure that they achieve the best possible outcome.
