ST. LOUIS - Dec. 27, 2021 - PRLog -- The Chapman family was surprised with some new year's cheer this past week when they became recipients of a zPods bed, an enclosed capsule bed that is being used to meet the sleep needs of autistic children. At 10 years old and diagnosed with ODD, ADHD, and autism, Mykah Chapman was sleeping four out of seven nights a week in a bathtub because she was unable to settle in her bedroom.
The bed, which sells at a $4,000 retail price, was donated by Kelly Wisness and her husband Ben Semchee, a social media influencer on the subject of cryptocurrency with over 30,000 followers. They knew that many autistic children—up to 80% according to some studies—face chronic insomnia, which can be taxing on both children and their parents and caregivers.
These children often seek out nooks throughout their homes to escape to for peace and quiet. At times, Mykah was only sleeping four hours a night, and medication was the only way her mother Nickie could get her to rest through the night. But she felt helpless about getting her out of the bathtub.
zPods, a recent recipient of a St. Louis Arch Grants award for startup companies, began roughly two years ago when they were able to help another autistic girl, Natalie, jump from sleeping four hours a night in her closet to 10 hours a night in one of their beds. Both Natalie's sleep and daytime performance have dramatically improved since she received her bed.
zPods continues to work with families across the United States. Kelly says, "We wanted to find a child in need of this kind of solution, and we wanted to find that child before the end of the year." With the help of Easterseals Midwest, the Wisness-Semchee family pinpointed the Chapman family as a recipient of their donation.
When asked what she'd like for Easterseals Midwest and the Wisness-Semchee family to know, mother Nickie Chapman said, "I'm so grateful that the therapists at Easterseals were listening to my concerns. They showed me compassionate understanding. I can't thank them and Kelly and Ben enough."
Mykah has already fallen in love with her new bed. "She's there all the time now and loves sleeping in it. I asked her if she was going to sleep in the bathtub still, and she said, 'I'm only going there for baths!'"
