Wendy Darling Scholarship Check Presentation to NVCC in Ashburn VA

AFCOM Potomac continues its commitment to the development of talent in the Data Center industry through their summer internship program

Ashburn, Virginia May 13, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - AFCOM Potomac Chapter will kick off their summer internship program with a celebration at Lost Rhino Brewing in Ashburn. (Register here.)  This year, AFCOM is hiring eleven interns, who will start their apprenticeships on May 23rd and work throughout the area through early August. AFCOM members, sponsors, and supporters are invited to join us to meet these interns in person and welcome them to our data center industry.

Now in its fifth year, the AFCOM Potomac Chapter has raised significant funds through the support of trusted industry partners such as Aligned Data Centers, CompuDynamics, CoreSite, CPG, CyrusOne, Iron Mountain, Primary Integration, Sabey Data Centers, Stack Infrastructure, SurePower, Trinity Construction, and Vantage Data Centers. Furthermore, Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) has pledged its financial support by providing grants to each of the students as they continue to help bridge the connection between academia and the data center industry.

With this support from the sponsors and NVCC, AFCOM Potomac Chapter is not only funding 11 full-time interns, but they are also continuing their $10,000 annual donation to the Data Center Operations Program (DCO) at NVCC via a scholarship. The Wendy Darling Scholarship was first established in 2021 and will continue this year and beyond.

"With the level of support we've received from the industry as well as NVCC sponsoring our internship program, it completes the circle of academia, internship, and eventually job placement in the data center industry. It is very important that we continue to pay for the DCO class for all students as to further advance their careers and expand their opportunity to enter into our great industry," said Stuart Dyer, Vice President at CBRE and Director of Scholarships & Internships at AFCOM Potomac.

"We strategically place students in a custom program specific to their interests in data centers and other industry firms that support their long-term career plans.  Students work for a total of ten weeks, making multiple stops at various data centers and service providers all around Loudoun County. This provides the interns with a unique opportunity to learn real-world applications in areas of the industry they're interested in. Whether it be mechanical engineering, architecture, real estate, IT, or facility operations." said Phil Baroody, National Director of Business Development at Rosendin and AFCOM Potomac Chapter Secretary. "Sponsors are provided with hard-working, eager-to-learn students who will be soon entering the job market."

The kickoff celebration is free to all data center industry personnel.  Register at https://www.potomacafcom.com/internship_2022
