A massive ransomware operation recently attacked several hosts and servers, including some of the largest databases worldwide. According to industry experts and authorities, the security flaw, tracked as CVE-2021-21974, targets Windows and VMware ESXi servers through the OpenSLP port. In less than a week, the number of affected VMware ESXi devices globally is currently at 2,400, including cloud services providers OVHcloud and Vultr.
ICBroker Exchange, the trusted platform of ICB Crypto Services, was among the many servers attacked by the recent ransomware. But unlike others that have been breached and their data stolen, ICBroker Exchange was able to deflect the said attack and reverse ransomware.
“Our technical team was able to decrypt the data even before the worst happened,” shared a company representative. “We were able to restore our system and eliminate the ransomware so our data remains safe,” the representative added.
According to the industry experts and authorities, including the Computer Emergency Response Team of France (CERT-FR), current investigations show that since the ransomware campaign targets ESXi hypervisors in versions before 7.0, admins of vulnerable servers must disable their Service Location Protocol (SLP) on ESXi hypervisors that have not been updated yet to prevent incoming attacks. CERT-FR also strongly recommends applying the patch for the CVE-2021-21974–which has been available since February 2021–as soon as possible to help avoid attacks, as well as scanning the systems for any sign of compromise.
