Child Car Seat Winter Safety Guide: Morton Grove, IL, Auto Repair Shop Update

With the winter months presenting a greater risk of vehicle accidents, Morton Grove, Illinois-based auto repair center ProAuto (847-572-8571) releases a new guide explaining the safety considerations for child car seats.

As part of a new safe winter motoring series, Illinois-based ProAuto announces a new guide highlighting some important considerations in the use of child car seats. The firm points out that thick clothing on children or babies can reduce the effectiveness of restraint harnesses, posing a potential risk in the event of an accident.

The US Department of Transportation reports that over 70% of the nation experiences snow and ice conditions during winter, increasing the risk of weather-related accidents. The department states that more than 1,300 people are killed on snowy or icy roads each year, and approximately 115,000 are injured.

In the new guide, ProAuto explains that the harnesses on child car seats can prevent serious injury during an accident, but their ability to do so can be reduced by thick layers of clothing. This occurs because the padding in heavy coats can be easily compressed, so harnesses may not be as tight as they appear.

To address this problem, ProAuto suggests several remedies, such as removing heavy clothing and using other methods to keep children warm. These can include covering the child or baby with a blanket, or pre-heating cars before beginning a journey.

“Making sure your baby stays warm and safe in their car seats takes a little extra care,” a company representative explained. “While we all want to keep our children warm, the tick padding in coats can become a gap between the seat harness and your child’s body, so it doesn’t perform as designed.”
